14TH World Conference on Tobacco or Health
Salaam Bombay Foundation hosted the 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health - 8th – 12th March 2009 at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) Hotel Trident Mumbai. Co-hosts were Healis Sekhsaria Institute for Public Health and Action Council Against Tobacco, India. The Conference was successfully conducted under the able guidance of Dr P C Gupta – Director, Healis Sekhsaria Institute for Public Health and President of the Conference and Padmini Somani – Director, Salaam Bombay Foundation. It was strongly supported by Dr. Harry Lando – Vice President, 14th World Conference on Tobacco Or Health and Chair, Fund Raising Committee, Dr. Srinath Reddy – Chair, Scientific Committee, Dr. Surendra Shastri – Chair, Scholarship Committee, Dr. Mira Aghi – Chair, Abstract Committee, Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi – Chair, Media Committee and Monika Arora – Chair, Youth Committee.
2089 delegates from 108 nations attended this triennial Conference which is a significant tobacco control event as also the largest Public Health conference to be held in India.
The Conference was inaugurated by His Excellency Mr S C Jamir, Governor of Maharashtra. Guests of Honour were Dr Anarfi Asamoah Baah, Assistant Director General of WHO, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, Former Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare - Government of India, Ms Supriya Sule - Member of Parliament, Mr Jayant Patil - Maharashtra State Minister of Home Affairs and a host of International and National dignitaries.
The World Conference was supported by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Government of India and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Maharashtra, Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, World Health Organization, Cancer Research UK, CDC, American Cancer Society, Indian Council of Medical Research, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, University of Minnesota among other national and international organizations.
